Kevin Mancuso

Kevin Mancuso has always possessed a pioneering spirit. An early interest in hair and particularly multiracial hair textures, fueled by an eclectic peer group during his school years in New York, allowed him to develop his curiosity into a fully-fledged career, leading him in 1979 to enroll at Beauty Academy in New York City. It was there that he was able to nurture a deeper understanding of different hair types and textures and how best to work with them.

After graduating Kevin spent five years honing his knowledge as an apprentice before assisting renowned hair stylist and photographer Ara Gallant on shoots. Working as a hair, make-up and photographer’s assistant under his guidance gave Kevin a unique insight into not just the way the industry worked but how hair moved and behaved on camera, in motion and in real life.  While his early years were influenced by myriad different inspirations, one significant visionary he held in esteem was Nexxus founder and the inventor of the modern day conditioner, Jheri Redding. A natural source of inspiration, Kevin relished the way in which Redding made transforming textures seem simple and it was this that would ultimately go on to shape his career path. Learning from Redding and building on his own experiences, Kevin gradually began to cultivate his own vision that combined an understanding of the intrinsic configuration of hair in terms of diameter and density with the ability to increase its strength, appearance, feel and performance.

A role at Vidal Sassoon soon followed his time with Gallant and it was there that Kevin mastered his precision cutting technique, learning about creating solid lines, dense shapes and aligning hair strands. Next he joined the John Dellaria Salon as Creative Director where he learnt a different skill set, developing ways of creating softness in hair and learning to distribute weight across the head evenly. In 1987 Kevin left John Dellaria to help set up Oribe’s first salon in New York where his clients included Naomi Campbell, Iman, Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista and Cindy Crawford; stints as Creative Director at Pierre Michele and Peter Coppola followed and in 2005 he opened his own salon on Park Avenue. In addition to his salon expertise Kevin’s place in hair history is cemented thanks in part to his hugely successful 1999 hair book, The Mane Thing and his instrumental role in co-creating the legendary Kiehl’s Stylist Series and the educational platform that came with it. Fundamental to Nexxus’ 360° approach is the intuitive desire to care for hair holistically and to charge it with effortless versatility and movement. While Kevin is a master of creative design, his qualification as a Trichologist adds to his veritable list of accomplishments as well as giving him a deeper, elemental understanding of all things hair, which in turn enables this all-encompassing approach.

An extensive career spanning 35 years means Kevin truly is an authority on hair inside and out. His experience, unclouded by the relentless cyclone of trends and fads enables Kevin to have a genuine insight into how to unlock movement in every hair texture, as is clear from his diverse fan base that includes icons such as Salma Hayek, Rachel Weisz, Kate Moss, Halle Berry, Christy Brinkley and Linda Evangelista.

Possessing an innate understanding of care, styling and cutting-edge technical skills, Kevin brings Nexxus New York Salon Care to life and it is his deep-rooted passion for transforming and enhancing hair, the Nexxus system and its instinctive ability to communicate with our customers, that makes him the perfect ambassador for this exciting new chapter of our story. As the official Creative Director of the flagship New York salon, Kevin has been instrumental in its development and design including the creation of the Nexxus Method, lending his unique cutting technique and the Nexxus New York Salon Treatment Menu. He has also taken a lead role in managing the recruitment and training of all salon stylists and will continue to push the brand and salon into the future, maintaining its position at the forefront of hair care science.
